Synopsis

Lieven Dupont was born on october, 29th 1966 in Poperinge. From 1978 he attended secondary  school at the ‘Sint Vincentiuscollege’ in Ieper, where he graduated cum laude in 1984. He started his  medical studies in 1984 at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Campus Kortrijk. From 1985 to 1987  he also worked as a student research fellow in the Laboratory of Biochemistry at the Katholieke  Universiteit Leuven Campus Kortrijk (head: Prof. Joniau). He received his medical degree, with great  honours, in 1991 at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Subsequently he started his specialty  training in internal medicine at the University Hospitals of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (head:  Prof. Vantrappen and Prof. Fevery). From 1994 until 1998 he fulfilled a research fellowship at the  Pulmonary Pharmacology Unit (head: Prof. Verleden) of the Laboratory of Pneumology, Katholieke  Universiteit Leuven, where he worked on several projects involving both in vitro and in vivo research  on asthma. In 1999 he completed his training as pulmonologist at the Department of Respiratory  Medicine, University Hospital Gasthuisberg, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (head: Prof. Demedts).  In 1999 he obtained his Ph.D. in Medical sciences at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven with his  thesis entitled ‘Characterization of 5-HT receptors modulating airway smooth muscle contraction : an  in vitro study’. From 1999 until 2000 he was working as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Lung  Function Laboratory (head: Prof. Sterk) at the Department of Pulmonology of the Leids University  Medical Centre (head: Prof. Rabe). Currently he is working as a consultant respiratory medicine at  the University Hospital Gasthuisberg, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and he is a part-time lecturer at  the Faculty of Medicine of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. In 1996 he was awarded the Glaxo  Wellcome Lecturer Award of the Belgian Society of Pneumology. In 1999 he received a scholarship  fund from the medical society Mathilde Horlait-Dapsens. In 2000, he was awarded the ‘de Falloise’  Award of the Belgian society of Pneumology. 

Since 2002 he also has a postdoctoral mandate of the Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek  Vlaanderen on research on chronic rejection after lung transplantation. 

He is married with Saskia D’haene and they have three children: Arnaud, Eurydice and Emile.  His main areas of expertise are currently (1) asthma (both clinical and research) with special interest  in non-invasive markers of airway inflammation and difficult-to-control asthma, (2) cystic fibrosis in  adults and bronchiectasis (3) lung transplantation with specific interest in pathogenesis and  management of chronic rejection (4) chronic cough and reflux. 

During my years as resident and consultant, I have participated as investigator to several clinical  trials in severe asthma, lung transplantation and cystic fibrosis.
