CF

Question
My mother caughs a lot and states she brings up sticky secretions. Can it be that at her age she gets CF?
Answer
Thank you for this interesting question. There are many different causes of chronic cough and coughing up sticky secretions. Especially in an adult the previous history is important. Does it concern an ex-smoker? Does this patient suffer from chronic obstructive lung disease or emphysema? But indeed there are also mild and atypical forms of CF whereby the diagnosis is only made in adulthood. This doesn’t mean that the person only got CF when he became older. Of course he has CF from birth, since it is an inherited disorder whereby that person will carry one CF mutation on each of his CFTR genes. It just means that the problems related to CF only started at a later age. Read more about this under the section diagnosis and atypical (mild) CF.
