Obstipation, reflux

Question
Since birth we worry about our little boy. He is 6,5 months old and it so happens that he has gastroesophageal reflux and constipation. He also coughs a lot and appears to have swollen tonsils. My nephew has CF. Our little boy is growing well. Do you think we check whether he has CF?
Answer
Dear parent,
You understand that this website only provides general information about the disease CF. To discuss the symptoms of your child we refer you to your doctor.

In general we can state that reflux, constipation, coughing, swollen tonsils are frequent symptoms in young children. In the combination that you mentionthe symptoms, they are not so typical for CF. These symptoms indeed occur in many children. Children with CF have frequent, loose and malodorous stools and they will have trouble gaining weight.

But when CF occurs in a family, it is important to be certain that other members don’t have CF. In these cases a sweat test continues to be the best diagnostic test to exclude CF. The test is also painful and readily available.
