how long does it take to do a genetic screening for cystic fibrosis?

Question
Hello,
I would like to know the time necessary to do genetic testing for cystic fibrosis. I am a cystic fibrosis woman and thinking about a child, my friend must have a screening test.
So, I would like to know how long does it take to have results.
Thank you
Answer
Dear questioner,
The most frequent mutation study is done with a kit which searches 50 mutations and lasts 2 or 3 weeks. However, if a gene sequencing to identify rare mutations is necessary, it will last 2 or 3 months.
It is important to know if your friend is carrying one mutation and usually the 50 most frequent mutation study is enough.
When you see the geneticist, the time necessary for a result will be given with more precision.
Sincerely yours
