Worry

Question
My little one is 4 years old, again and again bronchitis. She has had the medical check-up U8 yesterday and has underweight 96cm and 12,5 kg.
She is sweating a lot, the stool colour is light... the pediatrician means she is not a CF child however if one reads about the symptoms then I start to worry. The pediatrician wants to see my girl every 3 months for assessing the weight. Light stool??? She is having bowel movments 1-2 times a day sometimes normally, sometimes a bit mushy...
What does fatty stool mean?
Should I again contact the pediatrician or should I wait until september for taking the weight?
Answer
Hello,
you are worrying because of the health of your 4-year-old daughter, who suffers from bronchitis again and again and who has been diagnosed to be underweight at the U8 medical check-up. You observe furthermore that your daughter sweats a lot and has light coloured stool. Your pediatrician is of the opinion, that one should not worry about CF in the case of your daughter and wants to see your daughter every 3 months for a weight control.
If one matches the values for weight and height of your daughter with a percentile curve, your daughter is with her height in the lower normal range and the weight hints that your daughter is slim, however not yet underweight. As I do not know former values of your daughter, I cannot make a comment on the development during the first 4 years of life. In case the values of your daughter should have made a negative development in the last years (e.g. under-crossing the percentiles), an immediate investigation for the question of failure to thrive is necessary.
As your are personally worrying about CF and as frequent bronchitis is a typical symptom, one should do a sweat test as soon as possible a for calming you down, as otherwise the worry about this severe disease will not let you come to rest.
Therefore discuss the situation again with your pediatrician and ask her for the performance of a sweat test for your daughter.
We wish your and your daughter much luck.
