Immunoreactive trypsin (IRT)
- Ερώτηση
- Hello
does the IRT test remain significant for a 9-month-old baby? He has a growth retardation (weighing only 3.5 kg). His fecal elastase is positive and he suffers from abdominal distension.
Thank you - Απάντηση
- Hello,
Immunoreactive Trypsin (IRT) is an enzyme of pancreatic origin whose value is used in the context of CF neonatal screening. It's a screening test, which alone doesn't lead to the diagnosis CF. IRT serum concentration decreases in the first few weeks of life.
In the case of a 9-month-old baby for whom symptoms and results of fecal elastase may speak for the suspicion of CF, a sweat test should be performed, which is the benchmark test to confirm or not CF diagnosis.
