Again ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and Cystic Fibrosis

Question
Thank you for replying [refers to an answer given to an earlier question about ADHD]. But one question that is important to me is still open: Which interactions are know between Methylphenidat and antibiotics?

In several discussion forums about ADHD one can find the statement that Methylphenidat is without effect while taking antibiotics. But I only found statements of concerned persons, not of medical doctors.

Best regards and thank you.
Answer
Hello,

The producer of Methylphenidat does not describe any interactions with antibiotics in the product information. In the field of pharmacology the term "interactions" means that the resorption and the metabolism of a drug is accelerated or delayed due to the existence of another medication. In this context the producer only describes that other drugs that are changing the pH value of the urine can influence the duration of drug effect of Methylphenidat. In each single case it should be checked which antibiotic is prescribed by your attending doctor. Once a decision is made for a certain antibiotic you should discuss with your doctor if it could have any influence on Methylphenidat with regards to the mechanism mentioned above. Generally speaking I ask to consider the following: Due to the dysfunction of resorption in CF there are several reasons that can play a role influencing the efficacy (bio-availability) of Methylphenidat.
