Blood pressure and headaches while taking Kaftrio®/Kalydeco® (Trikafta®)
- Question
- Dear ladies and gentlemen,
Is it possible for blood pressure to rise uncontrollably while taking Kaftrio® or Alyftrek®, and for severe headaches—such as migraine attacks—to occur?
Sincerely, - Answer
- Dear patient,
Headaches are described as a "very common" side effect of Kaftrio® (Trikafta®), while elevated blood pressure is listed as "occasional." Alyftrek®, of course, has a similar side-effect profile. Therefore, it is indeed possible that your symptoms are related to the medication; if you wish to investigate this further, your only options are either to reduce the dosage and observe whether any changes occur, or—alternatively—to temporarily discontinue the medication and observe whether the symptoms persist in its absence. Should your symptoms improve after stopping the medication, you may still attempt to reintroduce it gradually; in many cases, certain side effects do not return when the medication is restarted in this manner—it is a matter of trial and error.
If blood pressure becomes elevated while taking a modulator—yet the medication is deemed essential for your treatment—it is certainly possible to manage the blood pressure using an antihypertensive agent, thereby allowing you to continue taking Kaftrio® or Alyftrek®.
Sincerely,
