polyps in a 10-year-old child
My 10-year-old son more than two years ago underwent for the first time polipectomy (choanal polyp in a right nasal cavity). Since that time he underwent polipectomy twice and right now his nose is blocked again, so I expect more polyps. He is constantly supervised by laryngologist, but I do worry about this fact. Isn't it cystic fibrosis? Once I asked my doctor about it, but he did't proposed any further tests. My son underwent allergic tests, he is allergic to mould and feathers. He is not treated with any drugs. Polyps occur in our family (my husband's family), so I think it is genetic... My son is rarely sick, suffers from common cold also rarely, he never suffered from bronchitis or pneumonia... He used to have flu, sore throats, but during past 18 months he hasn't been sick. He dosesn't cough, weighs 38 kg, has no eating problems. Should I do anything with this?

Follow-up question: growth and lung function
Dear Dr. Posselt, Many thanks for your answer, to which I have a further question. This is indeed about structural changes; you write that “lung tissue has a very low regenerative ability.” This could be positive during growth, though: the scar tissue does not grow, but the lungs as a whole do. In that sense, the percentage of healthy areas would have to grow. Could one hope that the amount of healthy tissue that grows back is disproportionally high? Many thanks,

Cannabis preparations
BV Bedrocan Cannabis is a dutch company producing cannabinol preparations in form of drugs. I would like to know your opinion concerning the treatment of CF patients with these drugs using Vaporiser (wet inhalation without burning process) or as an oral treatment. Is this treatment option available in Poland? In USA and in Europe such treatment is frequently used.

Does the presence of F508del and N1303K mutations mean the severe course of the disease?

Pseudomonas fluorescens
Dear expert team! The last throat culture test that my son underwent showed the presence of Pseudomonas fluorescens for the first time. Lung function was very well (at least the best out of the last five) and he is doing well. A while ago he had an infection. Now he is supposed to take ciprofloxacine and inhale 300mg tobramycine according to the Danish model. After four weeks another throat culture test will be done. My question is: What kind of germ is this and what does this mean regarding the prognosis? Unfortunately I only found very little information in other fora.

Pseudmonas aeruginosa in tobacco
In the health section of a large German newspaper there has been a citation last week from the university of Kentucky, in which PsA has been detected beneath many other germs in tobacco. It has been mentioned, that it is supected, that PsA can survive the process of smoking and therefore be inhaled from the smoker and also the non-smoker. How do you judge the danger, which arises for CF patients in this context from passive smoking? Are there probably observations about a decreasing number of new infections due to the gouvernmental ban of smoking?

Regarding cystic fibrosis
Hi, I am pregnant 27 weeks and just now mother-in-law saig me that her first-born daughter passed away at 7 month old owing to cystic fibrosis. If this disease is genetic and my mother-in-law and father-in-law are carrier hereof their son - my husband (he has twin brother) is carrier also. In my kindred no such disease, so may be that I have no this gene. What probability that my child who have a bun in the oven will has this disease like carrier or patient? Thank you.

Use tablets (Prenoxdiazine) 20 days. I had three course of antibiotics: now Doxicyclin (1 time a day). Blood analysis one month ago and now showed Leucocytes 9.3 both time. Other indices are normal. I had consultations with pulmonologist and ENT specialist. Cough (sometimes up to vomit) and hoarsenesss now are better, after Prenoxdiazine use I have cough with yellow purulent phlegm, now I feel chest pain. I am 53 yrs. May I can trust physician, who say, that I need more time for recover, if 2 moths was needed for drop of my cough?

Newborn screening
Hello, we have three children. Our daughter, 10 years old, has CF (delta F-508-unknown), our sandwich child is healthy and our youngest child was born in July 2009. In his case a newborn screening also looking for CF was done. Since we have not heard anything from the clinic by now we are wondering how safe the screening is, or rather, can we assume that everything is okay? (is one informed as well if only one value is not okay?) Thank you for your efforts. Best regards,
