Vitamin D
Hello, dear experts, The book „Heilkraft D“ [German title: “Heilkraft” could be translated with: “healing power”] of Dr. Nicolai Worm lies in front of me: basically, it says that vitamin D deficiency is responsible for all kinds of diseases (not for CF, that is clear, but for cancer, heart attack, etc.). And his designated threshold values are much higher than those usually recommended. Our CF patients are usually supplemented, our adult son with 1000 I.U. daily. However, the actual 25-OHD value is never checked… shouldn’t it be seen as well? And: Which values are optimal in your opinion? Thanks for your answer.

Side-effects of the inhalation of hypertonic saline?
Dear CF-team, I inhale 5.85% sodium-chloride solution (2x3ml per day). With that I realize, that more mucus is mobilized. My question: does hypertonic saline mobilize only more mucus or can the inhalation of hypertonic saline have also negative effects, that means increases the mucus production? In case the production of the mucus is not increased, how many ml per day is the permitted highest dosage according to your recommendation? Best regards and many thanks in advance.

Also CF?
My daughter is 14 years old, and physically disabled (exstrophy of the cloacae). In the last years she has had many pneumonias, often bronchitis, problems with diarrhoe...In the mean time she has been diagnosed with: extreme short stature, asthma, celiac disease (not approved via investigation of the bowel), furhtermore difficult feeding because of FI, LI, [the translator did not know what that two abbreviations mean], problems in digestion of fat (but: child because of diverse operations of the abomden near to a short-bowel syndrome), chronic sinusitis, malnourishment, scoliosis, need of oxygen at night because of dips of the saturation due to periodic breathing, delayed puberty... Now a sweat test should be done to her soon. My question: is it really possible in case of a mild course of the illness, that CF is not recognised in a regularly observed 14-year-old child by childrens'surgeonts / pulmonologists/ endocrinologist and other physicians, in spite of regularly performed thorax x-rays, blood-/ stool investigations? Many thanks for the answer

Suspicion of CF
Hello, a sweat test had been done to my child (10 years). The result was 61. The doctor did now perform a test of the blood, which does however not point at CF, but he wants to redo the sweat test in 2 weeks. He has asked several questions, which we acutally can answer negatively, e.g. if there are any problems with the weight or thriving. Now I am a bit confused, can the special blood test exclude CF for a 100%? Many thanks for your answer

Vaccination swine flu
Hello, This autumn it is planned to have my daughter (5 years old) vaccinated against the regular influenza for the first time. I read that in South Tyrol (where we live) 200000 vaccines against swine flu will be available, risk patients being preferred. Should I have my daughter vaccinated against swine flu as well? How well is this vaccine researched, with which side effects one has to anticipate? According to the media the symptoms seem to be similar to those of a regular flu. Isn’t it exaggerated to vaccinate so many persons? Many thanks

Elimination of Pseudomonas in the pool by adding chlorine?
Hello, My sister in law has her own pool. It is hardly chlorinated or rather unchlorinated. Now I am thinking that probably Pseudomonas can be found in the pool. Is it possible to eliminate it by adding chlorine only once? Or does it stay in the pool and my son, 7 cf, should therefore stay outside of the pool? Many thanks

Drug approval USA Germany
Dear expert team, There are promising new medicaments for the treatment of Cystic Fibrosis in the drug development pipeline, among these, substances of Vertex. Just in case these drugs will be approved, how likely is it in your opinion that these Vertex substances (and others like Denufosol and Moli) will be approved in the US earlier than in Germany? Greetings and thank you for your efforts.
