Question
Is allergy to Aspergillus frequently associated to CF ? Is there a link with the presence of Aspergillus in sputum ? Thanks for your response
Answer
Hello,
Aspergillus fumigatus is a fungus frequently observed in CF. Inhalation of Aspergillus fumigatus conidia can result in 2 clinical situations :
1) Aspergillus colonization (12 to 25% of the patients) can induce bronchitis and is defined by the isolation of Aspergillus fumigatus from at least 2 out of 4 distinct sputum samples per year
2) Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (1 to 15% of the patients) associates asthma symptoms, chest X-ray abnormalities, and biological signs of allergy (eosinophils increase, total IgE increase, and specific IgE, also called RAST, to Aspergillus fumigatus). Presence of Aspergillus fumigatus in sputum is not mandatory for allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis diagnosis.
I hope I have answered to your question. Best regards.
