RhDNase

Question
Side effects of Pulmozyme : is there another drug to replace it ?
Answer
Hello,
RhDNase (Pulmozyme) is a drug cutting into smaller pieces DNA from leukocytes which usually make mucus thicker and stickier in CF patients. This is the sole drug which acts by this way. Other drugs, such as hypertonic saline or mannitol, may improve mucus viscosity by another mechanism. All these therapies are inhaled and may induce several side effects like cough, bronchospasm, or haemoptysis. Depending on the side effect you are affected, you can inhale few puffs of bronchodilators before the nebulisation or switch your nebuliser for one with a lower aerosol output. You should contact your practitioner to discuss these options.
