cystic fibrosis
- Question
- Hello.
My name is Gabriel and Negus from Constanta.
My son David is 1 year old and was recently diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
He started the treatment but we are still unclear on one aspect. His belly is still large, despite the treatment. We give him Kreon (one tird of tablet, every meal - doctor reccomandation).
What can we do?
- Answer
- Dear Mr. Negus,
We understand from your question that your son was diagnosed relatively recent. Abdominal distension is likely to be secondary to malabsorbtion (long enough to cause abdominal distension) or in the dehiscence of the abdominal muscles (abdominal muscle “weakness”). Supplementation with enzymes (Kreon) is the substitutive treatment for exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, being very effective in therapeutic doses. It takes a variable time, from case to case, depending on many factors like the child's nutrition, pulmonary status and other factors.
Our advice is to continue to give him therapy recommended by the CF doctor who treats your child and go to the regular visit programmed at you regional cystic fibrosis center, for a correct monitoring and appropriate therapy.
If you have any questions, please let us know,
Good health and best regards,
Prof.Dr.Pop L
