Prevention
- Question
- Hello,
I have a 2 1/2 years old son with CF.
I was wandering weather nebulized hypertonic saline could prevent colonization, or what other mesures would help/prevent any infection risk.
Is it a good idea?
Best regards, - Answer
- Hello,
There is currently no recommended treatment for primary prevention of bronchial infection.
Aerosols of hypertonic saline are prescribed as an alternative in case of failure or intolerance to dornase alpha (Pulmozyme ®) to assist in bronchial drainage in children over 6 years. It is not recommended for the prevention of infections for young children. Nebulized hypertonic saline is a medical prescription. This medication may cause side effects include cough, bronchial constriction, or even blood in bronchial secretions.
To limit the risks of infections in your child aged 2 and a half, I will recommend basic hygiene standard and suggest that you discuss this topic with the professionals of your CF centre. At 2 ½ years old your child can already learn to blow his nose and to wash his hands.
Sincerely,
Marythé Kerbrat
