Rectal prolapse

Question
Is it possible to operate a rectal prolapse in spite of liver cirrhosis and enlarged vessels in the region of the bowel?
Answer
Hello,
in general this is a possibility, however one has to weigh - as always- under the individual circumstances the risk and the probability of sucess against each other. For the estimation of the risk one has to konw more about the impairment of the liver (coagulation parameters etc.) and the bypass-circulation (open portal vein? etc.) - this is managed best my the CF-physician or by the GI-specialist. To estimate the success of the operation the local findings have to be known exactly, before one can say anything about it - this is best the duty of the surgeon.
Then one has to estimate the degree of suffering - how worse is it felt? And then all have to come together to a consent opinion.
How important an optimal regulation of the bowel movments is, I do not have to mention in that context, of course. In CF that means always also an optimal adjustment of the amount of pancreatic enzymes to the respective meal.
Yours sincerely,
