Urolithiasis: how to do to avoid it?

Question
A great thank you, Dr Danner for your answer on urolithiasis. I forgot a question in my precedent message.
What about precaution to prevent urolithiasis apparition (diet, way of life, medicine…). What are the recommendation you advise to delay/avoid lithiasis.
Thank you.
Answer
Dear questioner,
The principal recommendation to avoid urolithiasis is to drink a lot, about 2 liters per day. It is necessary to increase this quantity of water during the hot season. A good hydration is the most important thing.
About diet, for people at risk of urolithiasis (independently of cystic fibrosis), it is advised to avoid a high-protein diet because protein increases level of calcium, oxalate and uric acid. It is also recommended to have a high-fiber diet, a lot of fruits and vegetables rich in potassium which reduce calcium absorption and lemon which could have preventive action on lithiasis formation.

About medical action, it seems important to have a good balance of calcium and vitamin D level. In case of a history of lithiasis, it is probably better to avoid antibiotics which play a role, assumed that it is possible according to health status and antibiotic sensitivity. If it is not possible, it seems very important to have a good hydration during this period.

Actually, there is no recommendation to avoid urolithiasis for cystic fibrosis patients. But, in case of history of lithiasis, it seems necessary to take these measures.

Sincerely yours.
Dr Isabelle Danner-Boucher
