RAISED SGPT

Question
can i use ursodeoxycholic acid because my SGPT is 73 with out any liver disease, & viral markers is also negative,
kindly advice me suitable for i am doing my SGPT is normal.
Answer
Dear Questioner

The use of Ursodeoxycholic acid (URSO) in CF liver disease is not a completely proven therapy. There is some evidence that it improves the blood markers of liver function and possibly also some of the pathological changes but no full evidence that it stops the development of liver cirrhosis which can occur in a small number of people with cystic fibrosis. Liver tests such as SGPT can be mildly abnormal without evidence of any significant liver disease. A level of 73 in our clinic would be a very mild elevation and in the absence of any liver disease there would be little to support the use of URSO in your situation. All drugs have side effects and in general it is better to only take therapy when it is truly indicated.

You should discuss this with your cystic fibrosis physician.
