Amiloride Preparation

- I would like to ask about the preparation of amiloride solution in our pharmacy. Does it have to be sterile even though our doctor doesn´t specify the need for sterilisation on the prescription?

- Hello,
We presume you mean the preparation of amiloride in small 20ml bottles. That is the only proper way of administering the medicine. Large 1 litre bottles, which are opened twice a day within the course of 1 month, are highly unsuitable, as there is a great danger of infection.
Amiloride solution isn´t sterilised during preparation in a pharmacy – that is why your doctor does not request it. The solution is filtered through a special filter and it is free of microbes, but it isn´t sterile. It doesn´t need to be sterile, as it isn´t administered intravenously, but through inhalation into airways. Even the air we breathe isn´t sterile. You needn´t be afraid – the solution is definitely harmless.
