Stenotrophomonas maltophilia

Question
Is intravenous antibiotics treatment necessary for a child with CF who has stenotrophomonas maltophilia and is resistant to peroral antibiotics? What other type of treatment would you recommend?
Answer
Hello,

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is found more and more frequently in CF patients, especially in older ones. Quite often this bacteria occurs temporarily or on an isolated occasion and its occurence is followed by a negative cultivation result. The patient isn't treated with antibiotics then. Isolated or repeated occurrence without clinical manifestation is typically not treated. Patients with clinical manifestation of infection are treated, usually with a combination of intravenous antibiotics, since this bacteria is resistant. Your doctor knows your child´s specific situation best and we're sure you can discuss this problem with him in great detail.
