chalk

Question
Hello
Are there any risks for children with cystic fibrosis to use chalk and clear the blackboard at school? Thank you for your response

Answer
The use of blackboard and chalk is very common in schools in France. The risks of this practice seem very low, even if some particles can be breathed. In children with asthma, the role of chalk dust as a factor increasing bronchospasm is discussed. No studies were found, however, about the specific risks of chalk in cystic fibrosis.
There is no reason to discourage a occasional use of chalks in schools for children with cystic fibrosis. It should nevertheless avoid the diffusion of particles of chalk in the air during the clean-up of the blackboard. For this, the child can use a wet cloth disposable, or a wet cloth washed and changed frequently, and he has to wash hands afterwards.

Dr Michele Gérardin
