infection

Question
Hello,
Does a CF person who would never have pulmonary infections preserve his/her lungs or do the lungs will be however involved ?
Thanks.
Answer
Hello and thanks for your question.
The lungs involvement is unfortunately constant. For instance, during the pregnancy where infection is not present, fetal lung abnormalities are already noted. Later, lung infections induce a more important pulmonary function decline, but recent studies show that, even in the absence of lung infections, the pulmonary function is altered. The aim of the close medical follow-up and of the different treatments is of course to limit as much as possible this respiratory involvement.
I hope to have answered your question. Best regards.
