Experinces with a rare fungus

Question
Can anybody tell me his experience with the rare fungus "Trichosporon asahii"?
Answer
Hello,

Trichosporon is a yeast-like human pathogen which may cause infections of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tract, the skin, and vagina. It may produce biofilms which helps the pathogen to persist in the body. Mostly immunosuppressed patients are susceptible to infections with this fungus. In immunocompetent hosts it may cause allergic pneumonia. A patient with cystic fibrosis died with histologically documented Trichosporon pneumonia complicating cystic fibrosis [1]. Trichosporon ashaii may demonstrate reduced in vitro susceptibility to antifungal agents. Treatment options are amphotericin B, voriconazole and posaconazole [2].

Prof. Gerd Döring
