Vase of flowers
- Question
- Hello, We were told in our center it was better to avoid plants ... Should we also be afraid of a vase of cut flowers, and therefore containing stagnant water (especially in relation to P. aeruginosa)? Thank you for your site, your answers and your time spent to respond.
- Answer
- Hello,
Respiratory contamination by micro-organisms can be acquired from the domestic environment. Pseudomonas aeruginosa or "PA" lives in wetlands, especially in stagnant water. You have therefore identified this germs reservoir. To reduce the risk of contamination, it is recommended to regularly change the vase water and add a few drops of bleach which will limit bacterial proliferation of PA. When handling the flowers (water change, for example), you can take extra precautions:
- Wash hands after handling.
- Cleaning with soapy water and drying vase of flowers between two uses.
The most effective precaution measure would be not to do the water change of a vase of flowers by the CF patient but by other members of the family.
By taking these precautions, you can, if you wish, take advantage of the presence of cut flowers in your home.
In general, what is important is to identify the highest risk situations in the home and the environment to reduce potential transmission of germs. However, contamination is still possible, its origin is often unknown and yet still random even if all the conditions of hygiene are met. Do not blame in this situation.
Best regards
