N-acetylcysteine (Mucomyst®)
- Question
- Why my 16-year-old CF boy has never received a treatment with N-acetylcysteine? Is this drug not indicated in such a disease? My daughter suffering from a viral bronchitis has been treated with N-acetylcysteine. Thanks for your response.
- Answer
- Despite in vitro mucolytic activity and a long history of use, there are no data demonstrating that oral or aerosolized N-acetylcysteine is an effective therapy for any lung disease. Moreover, one of the principal side effects of inhaled N-acetylcysteine is bronchospasm. So, this drug is not recommended, particularly when other drugs, such as RhDNase (Pulmozyme®), have proved their positive effects in CF.
