Inguinal hernia

Question
Hello,

is a strangulated inguinal hernia in infants, among other symptoms, a sign that should direct the diagnosis towards cystic fibrosis?
Answer
Hello,

Inguinal hernia is a common condition in children. It is linked to the persistence of the processus vaginalis implemented in the embryo at the end of the third month. It is a pathology which is in most cases uncomplicated, but there is a risk of strangulation of the hernia in 10-15% of cases.
It affects 1-4% of children. In 85% of cases it is a boy. Among favoring conditions or factors, there are actually cystic fibrosis and prematurity.
However an earlier study, found 10 cases of CF among 189 children, which is roughly the frequency of the general population.

Sincerely,
Dr. Sophie Ravilly
