CF and swiming pool

Question
Are swimming pools safe for children with CF?
What do we need to know?
Answer
Dear Questioner,

There is no absolute rule regarding chlorinated pools and cystic fibrosis.
Swimming pools are safe provided the recommended programme of maintenance is performed. In a well maintained public swimming pool the addition of a sufficient amount of chlorine to the water will kill the Pseudomonas bacteria.
In stagnant and strongly heated water high concentrations of Pseudomonas can occur.
Exposure to chlorine can cause irritation of the respiratory mucosa with coughing and mucus production as a result.
If you see that your child suffers from irritation of the upper or lower airways after swimming in a pool, we advise to stop swimming.

We hope this brief answer could help you.
With kind regards
Sigitas Dumčius
