Atelectasis

Question
My 15yr old daughter experienced an atelectasis in her right lung. She has been treated with IV antibiotics, airway clearance techniques and bronchoscopy for the past 6 weeks and the atelectasis is now 80% resolved. It seems that this problem may come back again despite rh-DNAse and airway clearance techniques. What are the risks associated with recurrent atelectasis?
Answer
Atelectasis may occur in CF patients. Treatment includes antibiotics and airway clearance using rhDNAse, physiotherapy and eventually bronchoscopy. Although the outcome is often good on a short term basis, recurrence of atelectasis in the same area of the lung may occur. The main risk is worsening of airway damage leading to loss in lung function.
