Atelectasis

- My 15yr old daughter experienced an atelectasis in her right lung. She has been treated with IV antibiotics, airway clearance techniques and bronchoscopy for the past 6 weeks and the atelectasis is now 80% resolved. It seems that this problem may come back again despite rh-DNAse and airway clearance techniques. What are the risks associated with recurrent atelectasis?

- Atelectasis may occur in CF patients. Treatment includes antibiotics and airway clearance using rhDNAse, physiotherapy and eventually bronchoscopy. Although the outcome is often good on a short term basis, recurrence of atelectasis in the same area of the lung may occur. The main risk is worsening of airway damage leading to loss in lung function.
