Laser dental treatment

Question
Is laser dental treatment (laser drill) more safe concerning the germ risk than conventional therapy with a surgical drill and saline soultion?
Answer
Hello,

there are several indications for laser treatment in dentistry: e.g. lasers are used to disinfect root canals and gum pockets, or to remove carious hard tooth tissue ("drilling"). Here, no cooling liquid is used. However, only the the softer dentine can be worked on with the laser, but not the tooth enamel. Old fillings cannot be removed with the laser either. Despite ("dry") laser treatment, it will therefore often still be neccessary to use a drill with water cooling in many cases.

However, using a surgical motor with saline solution, you are on the safe side concerning a potential germ load of the cooling liquids.

Kind regards,
