Nasal spray

Question
Hello, I had asked a question to you about the nasal spray sometimes ago, but my question was not good. I wanted to know how long the spray can be open before there is a risk of finding Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the spray. You said “2 months”. Do you think that the spray could not be used after these 2 months because of the microorganism? Thanks for your response.
Answer
Hello,
To the best of my knowledge it’s impossible for Pseudomonas aeruginosa to penetrate into the spray. On the other hand, this microorganism may be found on the nostril piece. That’s why you have to properly clean this piece after use.

There has been a former question from Germany on this topic, answered by Dr. J. Mainz, that can be summerized the following:
However, in case of impaired self-clearance of the airways, like it is the case in CF, it is not recommendable to exceed the named periods of usage for watery solutions. According to the preparation, duration of usage for opended sprays is declared from 4-12 weeks, which should be achieved by adding preservatives.
The modern nose-spray applicators should avoid the back-flow of secretions into the spray, however the tip of the applicator, which is brought into the nose, can certainly be colonized with germs. Therefore shorter times of usage are recommendable in CF, like 2-4 weeks, even if there are no studies on this topic. This question is of special importance, in case we have to deal with the eradication of problematic germs like MRSA or Pseudomonas aeruginosa from the upper airways.
