Cystic Fibrosis

Question
Hello, after a pancreatitis, my 10- year-old son has been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. He never had bronchitis. Sweat tests values are 55 and 50. The N1303K mutation was identified. His lungs, will they necessarily be damaged? Can people live with pancreatic insufficiency? Thank you very much for your information.

Answer
Dear questioner,
Pancreatitis can indeed lead to the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis. Usually, pancreatitis occurs in patients who have a moderate impairment and are pancreatic sufficient. Note that the values of the sweat tests are not very high. However, it is not possible to predict the respiratory impairment. Regular monitoring in your Cystic Fibrosis center (CRCM) is necessary.
The treatment of pancreatic insufficiency is to take pancreatic enzymes before every meal (CREON) whose amount will be adapted to the fat content of the diet. A daily oral supplementation ADEK vitamins is also necessary.
Best regards.
