Problem with urine

Question
For several days Ola's urine has a very unpleasant odour, I can't see the colour, because she urinates very often with small amounts of urine. Tomorrow I will go to do urinalysis. The glucose level measured with glucometer before night rest is 97. She drinks a lot. Should I worry? Greetings, Ola's mother from Opole
Answer
Dear questioner,
as this is a forum for CF-patients, I assume that your child is suffering from CF. You mention a glucose level of 97, so one could assume that your child is suffering form a CF related diabetes as you are controlling the blood glucose level with a glucometer. If you are talking about 97 mg/dl blood glucose level, than this is a good result. Coming now to the problem with the urine.

The symptoms, that you observed in your daughter (unpleasant odour, frequent urination with small amounts of urine) may indicate the urinary tract infection. In children, specially girls, this is a very frequent disease, which luckily can be treated successfully using guided antibiotic therapy. In practice this means, that in your daughter urinalysis and microbiological tests (bacteriological culture) should be done to identify the pathogen, which is responsible for the development of urinary tract infection. You should visit your family doctor, who will examine your daughter, recommend appropriate tests and introduce the adequate treatment.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Natalia Kobleska-Dubiel
