Stenotrophomonas

Question
Hello,
in my household there are 2 peole suffering from CF, one of whom has been infected with Stenotrophomonas.
My question, how does the other one have to react in order not to get infected? With my best regards,
K.
Answer
Hello,
Stenotrophomonas matophilia belongs to the opportunistic gram-negative germs (non-fermenter with the ability to bild up biofilms) and occurs in the evironment in water, ground and on different sorts of vegetables, like e.g. salad. S. maltophilia is found depending on age and gender in about 10% of CF patients. S. maltophilia is found more frequently in the airways of CF patients with advanced lung disease, bad nutritional status, mutiple treatments with antibiotics and/or steroids.
According to the guidelines of the German Robert-Koch-institute "Demands on hygiene in case of CF" (German website: www.rki.de/DE/Content/Infekt/Krankenhaushygiene/ThemenAZ/C/Info_CystischeFibr_Mukoviszid.html) for CF patients who are colonized with Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, there are no special recommendations like e.g. in case of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
In the household, affected people should perform the basis hygiene rules. Utensils of the body care (e.g. washcloths and towels) should not be shared with other members of the family/ patients. Also the inhalative therapy including cleaning and preparation should only be done seperately for every single patient.

Best regards,
Jörg Steinmann
