Dental brace/retainer in Cystic Fibrosis

Question
Are braces (that cannot be removed) problematic from a hygienical point of view? Would you prefer a retainer (removable orthodontic appliance)?
We as parents would rather prefer braces (that are attached to the teeth and cannot be removed) for our child.

Many thanks.

Answer
Hello,

fixed orthodontical appliances (bands and brackets) do have certainly the disadvantage that it is more effort to clean them and also the teeth to which these are applied. This is not the case with retainers that can be removed easily. Therefore, fixed braces are not recommended to those who are not much of a cleaner. With careful cleaning and regular control there are no hygiene concerns with this therapy form. Having CF is not a contraindication in general, since germs that can increase overly on badly maintained brackets, are present in the oral cavity on a natural basis and therefore the body “knows” these germs.
To prevent decalcification a weekly fluoridation (with gel) can be done at home.
