Stopping birth control

Question
My friend, now 35 years old, is born with CF.
It is said that people with CF are infertile, now my question is: Can I stop taking birth control pills?
We do not want to have children ...
Answer
Dear questioner,

Thank you for asking this question. As you indicate yourself, most men with CF are indeed infertile. That is because the defective chloride channel leads to an obstruction of the vas deferens so that sperm cells cannot get from the testicles into the semen. In medical terms it is called congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD). 97% of men with CF have such an absence of the vas deferens, and even the seed bags may be absent. Besides the abnormalities in the construction of these organs, CF can also cause abnormalities in the development and growth of the sperm which can be deformed or not sufficiently motile.
We recommend that your friend consults an andrologist. Andrology is the medical specialty that deals with the study, the diagnosis and the treatment of the male reproductive system such as reduced male fertility. An andrologist often collaborates with the gynecologist in a fertility center. Since not all men with CF are infertile, it is important that the seminal fluid of your friend is examined under the microscope, to see whether there indeed an absence of motile sperm so that there is no possibility of a spontaneous conception.

We hope that this is a sufficient answer to your question.

Sincerely
Prof. K de Boeck
