Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Question
Hello
Thank you for informing me if a Cf child may be contaminated by Pseudomonas aeruginosa only by direct contact or not.

So far, CF center warned us about this bacterium and its environment (stagnant water, wet ground, siphon etc.). However the mode of transmission is not clear. The fact of being in a room where are plants, muds with cut flowers, some stagnant water and some moulds is enough to be contaminated or is the transmission of the germ made by direct contact of the colonized surface?

Thank you for this clarification,

Mum of a CF child of 13 months
Answer
Hello

I’ll try to explain to you this mechanism.

The colonization by Pseudomonas aeruginosa is possible by direct contact between 2 patients who have this bacterium, by direct contact with the material or the environment contaminated at the hospital but the origin of the colonization at home remains still not clear.

There is not a risk of having flowers cut or plants in the house, to clean a siphon, if you respect the hygiene of hands after this activity and before to take care of your child.

It is also recommended to avoid rooms very very wet for your child, especially if it has to spend many hours in these rooms (to sleep for example).

So it is necessary to aerate regularly the house in particular rooms being wet as the bathroom.

The indirect transmission mechanism of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa is not so simple except the inhalation of droplets contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (spray, showers, jaccuzzi).

Very cordially
