Bronchiectasis

Question
Hello,
I wanted to know if bronchiectasis causes death? Is that nowadays it cannot be treated relatively well?
Thank you for your reply
Best regards
Answer
Hello,

It is actually severe chronic respiratory failure which is the most frequent cause of death in CF. It is the consequence of recurrent exacerbations of broncho-pulmonary infections on a chronic inflammation background which results in altering he bronchial walls and causes bronchiectasis which is accompanied by a worsening of bronchial obstruction promoting a vicious circle of infection and destruction of the bronchi and lungs.

Brochiectasis is irreversible and cannot be repaired. The challenge is to prevent its occurrence by including chest physiotherapy, physical activity and early treatment of pulmonary exacerbations. In severe chronic respiratory failure requiring symptomatic treatment, the only prospect of radical health improvement is provided by lung transplantation.

Hope this answer can help.
Best wishes
