Result of sputum investigation

Question
Today I got the result of my sputum investigation. For 6 months, I have not taken any antibiotics, either orally nor inhalative or i.v.. In spite of this it is written there, that antibacterial inhibitory substances were present. How can this be?
Answer
Dear questioner,
the finding of inhibitory substances from a sputum sample is uncommon (common would be the finding of inhibitory substances from urine in case of urinary tract infections). First of all I would recommend, to ask the laboratory, that offers the test and that knows the test protocols, about judgment and consequences (pos./neg. test).
Overall, the inhibitory substances are only little specific (not only antibiotics are detected) and the indicator germs for inhibitory substances are very sensitive. As sputum (in contrast to urine) in general contains lots of bacteria (or sometimes fungi), one can assume, that the positive finding of inhibitory substances is due to this flora. In my opinion it does not make much sense to measure those substances in the sputum.
