Lactoferrin

Question
Hello,
are there treatments or research regarding the use of lactoferrin as a bactericidal substance in cystic fibrosis?
Answer
Hello

To date, no treatment with lactoferrin as bactericidal, is available for treatment of CF. We found a publication (2015) by an American team, regarding the use of lactoferrin combined with hypothiocyanite (antibacterial agent not present in CF patients) which enhances the ability of antibiotics (tobramycin and aztreonam) to eliminate Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Alaxia company developed a drug-candidat ALX-009 (combination hypothiocyanite (OSCN-) and lactoferrin). ALX-009 is availabe as a solution for inhalation for the symptomatic treatment of lung infections. A clinical trial (phase 1) in healthy male volunteers and patients suffering from cystic fibrosis has just begun.
