Cystic fibrosis

Question
Many children with CF have vitamin D insufficiency. Many of them have this problem even if they use vitamin D supplements. What is the reason of it? Regards, Justina.
Answer
Dear Justina,
people with CF have trouble absorbing fat soluble vitamins (A, E, D, K) due to malabsorbtion of fat. In a significant number of individuals with CF serum levels of vitamin D are reducend . Although vit D is found in the diet, the majority of vitamind D is made in the skin from exposure to sunlight. Withought adequate levels of vit D, calcium is not absorbed efficiently from the gastrointestinal system. This can subsequently stimulate demineraliztion of the bone. For this reason many patients will require vit D supplementation. Daily fat- soluble vitamin supplements are especially important for individuals with pancreatic insufficiency.
