Is ectoine good for recurring bronchitis?

Question
Is inhaling NaCl 3% with ectoine (Pari Mucoclear 3% Protect ®) effective against recurring bronchitis?
Answer
Dear Inquirer,
At the beginning of our response, we would like to point out that ECORN exclusively answers questions related to cystic fibrosis (CF).
Accordingly, your inquiry also focuses on the connection to cystic fibrosis.
Ectoine is a natural cell-protecting substance. It can soothe the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, protect them from irritation, reduce inflammation, and keep the mucous membranes moist.
Therefore, research is being conducted to determine whether ectoine can be helpful as an inhalation solution for respiratory diseases.
Possible areas of application include dry cough, bronchitis, chronic respiratory conditions, and the prevention of inflammation. Initial applications in these areas already exist.
However, to date, there is only limited medical experience and small-scale studies available – primarily for patients with respiratory diseases or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

Currently, there are no scientifically controlled clinical trials for patients with cystic fibrosis (CF).
Some experimental studies suggest that ectoine may have anti-inflammatory effects and mitigate certain harmful changes in lung cells.
For example, a 2025 study by Tim Spannbrucker et al., published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, described how so-called "compatible solutes" (which include ectoine) were able to prevent pneumonia and a reduction in the CFTR protein—an important factor in cystic fibrosis—in animal studies and cell models.
However, these results still need to be confirmed in clinical trials in humans.
Ectoine is generally well tolerated and can be an option as a complementary, natural treatment.
Whether ectoine inhalation is appropriate for a patient with recurrent bronchitis should always be discussed and decided upon in consultation with their doctor.

In contrast, Mucoclear® 3%–6% is an established and recommended inhalation therapy for cystic fibrosis (CF), offering both mucolytic (mucus-loosening) and anti-inflammatory effects.

Sincerely,

Dr. Christina Smaczny
