Heredity
- Question
- My son is going to have a child. He does not have CF, but has a younger brother with CF. How can he find out if he is a carrier?
- Answer
- Dear CF parents,
A patient with CF has a mutation (=pathological change) in each of his CFTR-genes. A carrier of CF has a mutation in one of these genes. The majority of CF-patients in Sweden has their mutations in the CF-gene determined. If both mutations of the younger brother are known, it is very easy to find out with a blood test if the older brother has any of these mutations. If one or both of the mutations of the younger brother not be known, your CF-centre can make supplementing tests to determine these, and will in most cases get to know both mutations. Thereafter can the older brother be examined with a bloodtest.
For further details your CF-centre will be happy to guide you.
Yours sincerely,
