Bleeding of the lungs and flying
- Question
- Hello. A few years ago I had a severe bleeding of the lung, that had been "repaired" via 2 embolizations. Now my question: Do longterm flights facilitate bleedings of the lung (saturation about 95%)? Many thanks for your efforts.
- Answer
- Hello,
an increased risk for lung bleeding at longterm flights is not known to me. Accordingly, the literature research done by me did not give a hint for an increased risk of lung bleeding due to longterm flights. Solely, one hint for a lung bleeding during a flight can be found in the literature, this was, however, with a simultaneous hemodilution with heparine within a thrombosis prophylaxis.
In the foreground of the problems at flight travels are without doubt the backup of a sufficient supply with oxygen, which is not a problem with a saturation of 95%, a possible pneumothorax and an increased risk of infection.
In case of a detailed preparation in cooperation with your CF center in charge, longterm flights are feasible for most patients with CF.
Yours sincerely,
