Cystic fibrosis death and IVF

Question
Two years ago my sister died from CF. I would like to know if the fact that she was conceived through IVF mattered.
Answer
Dear friend,
The fact that your sister was conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) did not affect in any way either the severity of the CF mutation your sister suffered from, nor the natural course of the disease. The chances for the presentation of CF, when both parents are carriers of the CF mutated gene, are the same for a natural conception and for IVF. The last years, of course, all couples that wish to undergo an IVF procedure are subjected to genetic screening to exclude the possibility of them being carriers of the CF mutated gene, in order to avoid having a baby with CF.

Yours friendly,
Dr. Anna Ioannidi - Katelari
