CF: Mutation of chloride channel?

Question
Dear Sir or Madam,

During a test in the subject „clinical pharmacy“ the following statement was made:

“In CF there is a mutation of the chloride channel.”

One should consider if this statement is correct. In my opinion it is wrong (...).

What do you think?

Best regards
M. K.
Answer
Hello,

Actually, the statement „In CF there is a mutation of the chloride channel.” is very imprecise for several reasons.

First, it is not the chloride channel which is mutated but in CF patients there can be found mutations in both CFTR-alleles (one in the CFTR gene from the father’s side and one from the mother’s side) which are the reason why a functioning cAMP-dependant chloride channel is developped not at all or not sufficiently.
Coloquially, one might talk about a mutated chloride channel but this expression is scientifically not correct.
Secondly, there are also alternative chloride channels and not only the CFTR protein.

The question [the expert probably meant: the statement] is phrased in a sloppy way and therefore contestable. In a literal way I also think the statement is more wrong than right.
