CF and scoliosis

Ερώτηση
My 13-year-old daughter has a scoliosis of over 40 degrees. It is probable, that the bending is getting worse the coming year. Is it a disadvantage if the spine is not operated (conerning the lung function)?

Hello,
you report, that your 13- year-old daughter has a scoliosis of the spine that is actually of more than 40 degrees. You were seemingly told that it is probable, that the bending is getting worse in the course of time. You ask, if it would be disadvantageous for your daughter concerning the lung function, it she is not operated.
A bending of the spine of more than 40 degrees is quite a severe finding and it is very probable that your daughter will suffer from strong back pain, if it is not alreday the case, yet. A further worsening of the bending will for sure lead to impaired airing of the lung and will be disadvantageous for the lung function. At the same time, your daughter will not be able to do her daily necessary airway physiotherapy optimally due to pain.
If there are no arguments because of the actual lung situation of your daughter against an operation, the operative treatment should be done as soon as possible. Hereby it is important, that the physicians of the CF center get in contact to the orthopedic collegues and plan together the post-operative management.
I wish you and your daughter a good and successfull operation.
Best regards,
Dr. H.-G. Posselt
