Stenotrophomonas maltophilia

Vraag
Dear expert team!
this germ can be found in the samples of my son for a longer period of time. Does it make sense to treat?
Many thanks

Dear questioner,
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a stubborn germ. Many CF patiens are colonized permanently by it. Not always it is the reason for an exacerbation. Hereby, the physician in charge has to consider, in how far an antibiotic treatment is necessary.
Frequently it will be decided to use only Azithromycin, in order to stop the growing and activity of this germ.
In case of the finding of the Stenotrophomonas germ and increased inflammatory markers and bronchial reactions and increased airway secretions, an i.v. therapy is necessary.
An oral treatment with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole can be tried, if there is no resistance or a therapy with rifampicin (according to resistogram).
In case of no clinical symptoms one would be reserved concering treatment.
Best regards,
Dr. H.-E. Heuer
