Growing up with CF
- Question
- My baby has started chewing its food and the creon as well, or it sets it apart. Is it available as powder? What can I do? Thank you!
- Answer
- Dear friend,
Enzymatic therapy /Kreon/ is based on supplementation by pancreatic enzymes in galenic form of micropellets and they are saved in gelatine capsules. Micropellets are covered with acidoresistent coat, this film saves enzymes prior to acidic ambient of stomach. It is important that patients do not chew the granules, because that will damage the protective shield.
For little children (if the sole micropellet preparation is not available) the gelatine capsules can be opened and the micropellets should be mixed with a small amount of liquids (e.g. water, tea, breast milk, infant formula) or a small amount of food, like fruit purree (better than milk products). This mixture should be given from a spoon directly before the feed. The pellets should not be mixed with the entire amount of food.
Try to trick the child into swallowing the spoon with water plus pellets or make it appear as a game.
Yours friendly,
