- Can one die from cystic fibrosis?

- CF or cystic fibrosis is indeed still a life shortening disease. The median life expectancy for patients with CF is approximately 37 years. For patients born after 2000, the estimate is that the median life expectancy will be around 50 years. CF causes problems in several organs but lung disease is the main cause of mortality. Chronic infection and inflammation damages the lung. In patients with severe lung damage the possibility of lung transplant can be considered. This will offer a second chance but still will not bring about a normal life expectancy. Also after lung transplant the median survival is in range of 8 to 10 years. We hope that treatments who attack the basic defect in CF will further improve the life expectancy.
