Also known E. coli, Escherichia coli is an intestinal bacterium mammals very common in humans. It exists in large quantities in feces, mostly as a commensal organism (its presence is neutral or beneficial to the host). However, some strains may have a pathogenic feature and it is the most common cause of urinary tract infection.
Although occasionally present in sputum culture of patients with pneumonia, it is not a germ that usually raises problems in cystic fibrosis.
If E. coli is found in sputum culture when there are no symptoms, make sure that this is not contamination, and possibly control the examination.
