Bronchitol®

Question
Hello,

I’ve just seen that Bronchitol® should be commercialized in Europe.
Is this medicine for all cystic fibrosis patients?
What are the advantages of this new medicine ???

Thank you for your answer
Answer
The pharmaceutical company Pharmaxis announced at the end of October that the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has adopted a positive opinion recommending the granting of a Marketing Authorisation for Bronchitol® in Europe for the treatment of adults with cystic fibrosis. We will have to wait for a positive opinion from the European Commission before the granting of the Marketing Authorisation.

Bronchitol® is already delivered in Australia where it has been developed. For the moment, it will be only for adults CF patients (aged 18 and above) but new trials are undertake in children (aged 6 to 17). The administration is indeed not adaptable to younger children (inhaled dry powder), as they do not have a sufficient inspiratory flow.

Bronchitol® clinical trial results have been discussed in several international medical conferences, as at the very recent conference in California at the beginning of November. Bronchitol hydrates the lungs, helps restore normal lung clearance, and allows patients to clear their mucus more effectively. These trials have shown that this medicine (added to the medications usually taken by the patient) could reduce the respiratory exacerbations and could moderately improve the lung function.

Sincerely
